Marin County- Highway 1 Road Trip
Continuing South on Highway 1 from Mendocino County, you’ll arrive in Marin County. Marin County has an interesting mix of upscale, rich communities and older areas. I’m very fond of the older (less commercial) towns in Marin county.
Here are some spots worth checking out:
The Hog Island Oyster Company has been a favorite of mine for years. I’ve never been a huge fan of Oysters but they are interesting enough for me to eat once every few years. It’s a novelty that I really enjoy and their location in Marshall, CA is beautiful. It’s a great place for a picnic! Make sure to make reservations in advance.
While France is best known for its cheese, California has some pretty amazing cheeses too. Cowgirl Creamery is by far my favorite cheese in California! When you go to Point Reyes Station, California, you can watch them make the cheese and buy some of the freshest cheeses you’ll ever have! Also, try the Inverness. You won’t be able to buy it anywhere else (except also at the Ferry Building in San Francisco).
Point Reyes Station, CA
Point Reyes Station is a super cute little town. It’s one of those little towns that isn’t overly commercialized yet. There’s a cute bookstore, coffee shops, bakeries, etc. Totally worth stopping off for lunch or just a coffee at Toby’s.
All along Highway 1 there are beaches that are great for hanging out. Some are more popular than others. Some are better for surfing (with a wet suit). While you are driving, stop off at a few- you’ll see plenty of turn offs for beaches. It’s a great spot for a picnic. The water is a bit chilly though.
Golden Gate Bridge
The Golden Gate Bridge is the gateway to San Francisco. Right before you get to the bridge, you’ll get to the Robin Williams tunnel. The tunnel dedicated to the great, late comedian. And as soon as you get through the tunnel, you’ll see the gorgeous views of the bridge and the city! If you have time, take an hour to walk across the bridge. It’s really gorgeous!
